London CNN —British actor Ian Gelder, best known for his role as Kevan Lannister in “Game of Thrones,” has died at age 74, his husband and fellow actor Ben Daniels announced on Tuesday. “It is with huge huge sadness and a heavy heart broken into a million pieces that I’m leaving this post to announce the passing of my darling husband and life partner Ian Gelder,” Daniels wrote on Instagram. “He was the kindest, most generous spirited and loving human being,” Daniels wrote in tribute to his “rock” and partner of 30 years. Over the course of a decades-long career, Gelder appeared in TV shows like “Torchwood,” “His Dark Materials” and “Doctor Who,” but it was his performance in “Game of Thrones” that catapulted him to a new level of fame. Gelder was also a veteran stage actor, playing major roles including Antonio in “The Merchant of Venice” and the Duke of Clarence in “Richard III” at the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC).

So the castaways gathered palm fronds from the 31-acre island, arranged them to spell out “HELP” on the beach, and waited, according to a Coast Guard statement. The names of the stranded men have not been released by the Coast Guard, and CNN attempts to contact their relatives have not gotten replies. When the Coast Guard cutter Oliver Henry reached Pikelot on April 9, the story took another twist. “He couldn’t believe I’m with the Coast Guard trying to rescue them.”The man was a third cousin, the others fourth cousins, he said. “It could be coincidence,” said Chief Warrant Officer Sara Muir, public affairs officer for US Coast Guard Forces Micronesia.

A May 1985 report in the journal Nature was alarming. High above Antarctica, a massive hole had opened in the ozone shield that protects life on earth from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. The finding confirmed what scientists had warned of since the 1970s: Atmospheric ozone was being broken down by the wide use of chlorofluorocarbons, chemicals known as CFCs, which were found in aerosol sprays, refrigeration and air conditioning. Just over two years later, dozens of nations meeting in Montreal signed an agreement to significantly reduce CFCs, which the Environmental Protection Agency estimated would prevent 27 million deaths from skin cancers. “This is perhaps the most historically significant international environmental agreement,” Richard E. Benedick, the chief United States negotiator, said at the time.

The string of numbers on the lottery ticket that John Cheeks bought matched those posted on a Powerball website. Had he beat unfathomable odds to win the $340 million grand prize? Not according to Powerball administrators, who said the numbers Mr. Cheeks saw on the site were part of a test that had been “mistakenly posted,” rather than the winning numbers for the drawing in January 2023. Mr. Cheeks has asked for the $340 million in compensation, as well as damages and interest on the winnings. “This is not merely about numbers on a website,” Richard Evans, a lawyer for Mr. Cheeks, said in a statement.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — The wife of a northwestern Iowa county supervisor was convicted Tuesday of a scheme to stuff the ballot box in her husband’s unsuccessful race for a Republican nomination to run for Congress in 2020. Woodbury County election officials became aware of possible voter fraud in September 2020, when two Iowa State University students from Sioux City requested absentee ballots, only to learn ballots had already been cast in their name. When processing absentee ballots on election night, election workers notified Gill that the handwriting on a number of them appeared to be similar. Most voter fraud cases involve one voter casting a single ballot in another person’s name, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard Evans, who helped prosecute Taylor’s case. “Despite what’s in the media, voter fraud is extremely rare,” Evans said.

Oil and natural gas prices tumbled further Thursday, dragging down Club holding Coterra Energy (CTRA) and other energy stocks along the way. And in this moment, the group is out of favor amid declining oil and natural gas prices. Natural gas prices dropped more than 4% Thursday, to roughly $3.044 per million British thermal units, or MMBtu. Meanwhile, weather forecasts hold significant sway over demand for natural gas. And on Thursday, the EIA said natural gas in storage rose by 60 billion cubic feet, which was more than the market expected, according to FactSet.

LONDON, Nov 15 (Reuters) - Writer, director and actor Emerald Fennell follows up her Oscar-winning feature debut "Promising Young Woman" with a starry satirical thriller, "Saltburn". Oliver's status and confidence are given a boost when Felix invites him to spend the summer at Saltburn, his family's sprawling countryside estate. "Promising Young Woman", which earned Fennell a best original screenplay Oscar, came out in 2020 and its release during the COVID pandemic helped ease some of the sophomore film pressure, Fennell said. Fennell, whose acting credits include "Barbie" and "The Crown", said she spent years writing the script in her head, revisiting the characters and the locations. The star of her debut film, Carey Mulligan, also makes an appearance in "Saltburn", alongside Rosamund Pike and Richard E. Grant, who play Felix's parents.

To be sure, even with Monday's advance, oil prices remain well off their late September peaks. In addition to receiving a lift from crude's gain, Coterra is benefiting from the continued strength in natural gas. On Monday, natural gas futures rose another 1%, to around $3.37 per million British thermal units. Last week, natural gas surged 14% to reach its highest price since late January. The stock's massive outperformance Friday means that any financial benefit Pioneer would receive from Monday's higher oil prices was already captured in the session prior.

The Year Lou Reed Gave Up on Music

Lou Reed strode onto the stage at Max’s Kansas City late on a Sunday night in August 1970. “We’re called the Velvet Underground. Danny Fields, a regular at Andy Warhol’s Factory who would soon discover the Ramones, was there, as he was virtually every night. Like Warhol, she was an obsessive taper, and had recorded a number of Velvets shows that summer. The tape would soon be passed around the underground and would eventually be released as an album — since Reed had decided this would be the last Velvet Underground show.

With Warhol's permission, Mr. Ekstract took them to a commercial printer, who made a second set of self-portraits, following Warhol’s directions given over the phone. As part of the deal, one of the portraits would appear in Mr. Ekstract’s new magazine, Tape Recording. To celebrate the magazine’s debut, Mr. Ekstract, with characteristic flair, threw a party on abandoned rail tracks underneath the Waldorf Astoria hotel. Despite ample documentation about its origins, when Mr. Simon-Whelan asked to have the work authenticated by the Warhol Foundation, his request was denied multiple times. He sued, and in 2010, after the foundation had spent $7 million in legal fees, Mr. Simon-Whelan gave up, having run out of money to continue.

Amor Towles Sees Dead People

The novelist Amor Towles, whose best-selling books include “Rules of Civility,” “A Gentleman in Moscow” and “The Lincoln Highway,” contributed an essay to the Book Review recently in which he discussed the evolving role the cadaver has played in detective fiction and what it says about the genre’s writers and readers. Towles visits the podcast this week to chat with the host Gilbert Cruz about that essay, as well as his path to becoming a novelist after an early career in finance. “I remember finishing ‘Rules of Civility’ and feeling like … I don’t know if it’s going to be popular, I don’t know if it’s going to sell, but this is what I wanted to do,” Towles tells Cruz. “It was a great sort of renewal of confidence that I had as a younger person of, yeah, I can do this. And I would have gone on and on and on, I would have written books that nobody read, you know, until I died, I think quite happily.
